The alumni of the Department of Architecture, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore celebrated 60 years of the department’s founding.
The department started sixty years ago in December 1962 as the first institute in the country to offer a five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) professional degree program. To celebrate this important occasion, the Chairperson Dr Munazzah Akhtar, and all faculty members organized the Alumni Reunion. Over 200 alumni were thrilled to have this opportunity as it was the first alumni reunion ever organized by the department.
Vice-Chancellor UET Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar was also in attendance at the event. Besides many senior graduates and distinguished alums, the event was also kindly attended by Prof Dr Mehmood Hussain, an alumnus from the department’s first graduating class, and who also served as the Chairperson of the Department of Architecture and as the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, UET Lahore.
The event opened with an overview by Dr Munazzah Akhtar of the department’s highly qualified current faculty and their areas of expertise. She also informed the alumni about the international collaborative activities and the innovative teaching directions that the department has recently taken. Dr Akhtar encouraged the alumni to stay engaged with their alma mater and involve themselves more energetically with opportunities that will help further the department’s growth.
This was followed by video messages from the pioneering faculty of the department – Prof Dr Shaukat Mahmood, Mr Parvez Vandal, Prof Dr Rafique Malik, and Prof Dr Abdul Rehman – reminiscing on the remarkable journey of the Architecture Department.
The alumni also had the chance to hear from Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar, who expressed his delight at the fantastic turnout and stressed the importance of the alumni community for any institute. Dr Sarwar also thanked the alumni for their enduring connection with the department over these past 60 years.
With the keenness of reuniting with old friends for the first time after graduating, the reunion was a wonderful opportunity for the alumni to recollect over a delicious lunch. The alumni also recalled and recreated their memories of various spaces, nooks, and corners inside the department, especially showing their affection for the central courtyard. Before the event came to an end, the alumni requested the Chairperson that such events should be organized by the department more frequently in the future.
