The University of Home Economics (UHE) Lahore hosted the Punjab Youth Summit 2025, bringing together students, government officials, and international representatives to address the pressing issue of illegal migration and explore local opportunities for youth empowerment.
The event featured prominent attendees, including Nikhil Lakhanpal, Deputy Political Chief of the U.S. Consulate Lahore; Ben Warrington, Head of the British High Commission Lahore; Dr Faleha Zahra Kazmi, Vice-Chancellor of UHE; MPA Uzma Kardar; Siddiqa Batool; and Syed Kauser Abbas, Director of the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO). Students from seven universities across Punjab participated, engaging in discussions on the socio-economic impacts and challenges of irregular migration.
In his address, Ben Warrington highlighted the significance of Pakistan’s youth, stating, “With 62% of Pakistan’s population being young, they are the country’s greatest asset. However, illegal migration is depriving them of opportunities.”
Nikhil Lakhanpal echoed this concern, warning of the dangers associated with mass migration. “It is a devastating reality that young people become hostages to smugglers. Preventing mass migration remains a priority for the United States,” he emphasized.
UHE Vice-Chancellor Dr Faleha Zahra Kazmi underscored the role of education and skill development in curbing illegal migration. “By providing quality education and training to our students, we can protect them from the challenges of migration and create better opportunities at home,” she stated.
During a panel discussion, MPA Uzma Kardar elaborated on Punjab’s legislative efforts to combat illegal migration. “Punjab has already implemented laws to curb illegal migration, and the government is taking further measures to address the issue,” she asserted.
Syed Kauser Abbas emphasized the need to create sustainable local opportunities for the youth. “Encouraging young people to seek employment and growth within Pakistan rather than opting for unsafe migration routes is crucial for the country’s development,” he said.
Dr Iram Rubab, Director of Student Affairs at UHE, concluded the summit by expressing gratitude to the distinguished guests and participants. She reiterated the significance of tackling illegal migration, stating, “The Punjab Youth Summit 2025 has served as a crucial platform for raising awareness and proposing practical solutions to combat illegal migration, ensuring a brighter future for Pakistan’s youth.”
The summit underscored the urgency of addressing illegal migration through education, legal reforms, and economic opportunities, fostering a collective commitment to securing a prosperous future for Pakistan’s youth.
