Universities play a key role in identifying and solving social problems. A strong collaboration between academia and industries is the need of the hour as it will help in identifying and solving the problems being faced by the industries.
We have to promote research keeping in view the needs of the industries and they should inform the universities about their needs so that research could be conducted according to their needs. This will not only benefit the industries but also help in improving the standards of the society.
It is the primary responsibility of the universities to provide professional education as well as practical experience to students. Public private partnership is essential for the development of any institution and this is a very good sign that the University of Karachi is fully committed to it.
The collaboration between academia and industries provides employment opportunities not only to the graduates of the universities but also to the students during their studies.
These views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the newly renovated Dr Essa Lecture Hall at the KU Department of Food Science and Technology, Karachi University.
The Dean Faculty of Science Professor Dr Nasira Khatoon, the Chief Executive Officer Dr Essa Laboratory and Diagnostic Centre Professor Dr Farhan Essa Abdullah, the Chairperson Department of Food Science and Technology Professor Dr Shahina Naz and representatives of various industrial establishments were also present on this occasion.
The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi advised that it is also necessary for the students to gain practical work experience as per the needs of the market. Meanwhile, Professor Dr Farhan Essa said that the importance of a good diet for achieving a healthy life cannot be denied and the graduates of this department have a very important role to play in terms of food safety.
He believes that students of food science and technology would create awareness among masses regarding the role of importance of using a healthy diet and never compromise on food’s quality.
He informed the audience that renovation of the building was just the beginning and he would like to contribute in uplifting other departments of the University of Karachi as well.
The Dean Faculty of Science Professor Dr Nasira Khatoon said that Dr Farhan’s continuous cooperation with the varsity is commendable. She hoped that such collaboration would yield positive results.
