The University of Karachi (UoK) has updated its guidelines on student attire, emphasizing the importance of appropriate and respectful clothing on campus.
In a notice issued on January 14, 2025, Dr Nosheen Raza, the Students’ Adviser, outlined the dress code requirements. Students are expected to wear clean, modest clothing that aligns with the standards of an academic setting.
The updated policy prohibits attire considered inappropriate or disruptive, including revealing or transparent clothing, shorts, sleeveless or tight-fitting outfits, and items with offensive language or imagery. Casual footwear such as flip-flops is also restricted on university grounds.
Speaking to Geo.tv, Dr Raza explained that such notifications are routine to ensure discipline. She highlighted that Karachi University, one of Pakistan’s largest institutions, serves a student body exceeding 45,000.
The guidelines have been issued at the start of the new academic year, as new students enroll and evening admissions bring additional intakes. Dr Raza noted that the reminder aims to acquaint incoming students with the university’s policies. She emphasized that the dress code reflects the institution’s commitment to fostering a respectful and modest environment for everyone.
