In a significant collaborative initiative, officials from the United States government and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) came together to inaugurate their newly established e-Mobility Research and Development Center. The center, jointly funded, is situated at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering on LUMS’ Lahore campus and is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing electric vehicle technology in Pakistan.
The primary objective of this research and development center is to propel the widespread adoption of electric vehicles across Pakistan. By focusing on local innovations in electric vehicle design, battery solutions, associated electronics, and technical standards, the center aims to contribute substantially to the growth of the electric mobility sector in the country.
During the inauguration ceremony, U.S. Consul General in Lahore, Kristin Hawkins, emphasized the longstanding partnership between the United States and LUMS, tracing back decades. Drawing parallels to the initial support extended during LUMS’ founding, Hawkins expressed the United States’ commitment to aiding LUMS in addressing contemporary challenges through cutting-edge research and education initiatives.
This collaborative effort materialized within the framework of the U.S.-Pakistan “Green Alliance,” an initiative designed to tackle environmental issues and foster sustainable development. The event witnessed the participation of key stakeholders, including representatives from LUMS, the electric vehicle and battery manufacturing industry, and USAID’s Power Sector Improvement Activity.
Dr. Tariq Jadoon, the Provost of LUMS, took the opportunity to extend gratitude for the ongoing support from the U.S. government. He acknowledged the vital role played in steering Pakistan towards a cleaner, more efficient, and reliable energy sector. Dr. Jadoon also lauded the U.S. for laying a robust foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth through collaborative efforts with the private sector in the country. The inauguration of the e-Mobility Research and Development Center signifies a major stride in this shared journey towards a greener and more sustainable future for Pakistan.
