The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore (UVAS) observed the International Women’s Day by arranging a walk and seminar with the theme “Better the Balance, Better the World, Balance for Better”, on Friday.

In this connection, the university organised a walk led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, along with Prof Dr Shafaat Yar Khan to create awareness about women’s rights, while Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, Prof Dr Aneela Zameer Durrani and women from the civil society, administrative staff, faculty and students from Shauoor Society, UVAS were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha and Prof Dr Shafat Yar Khan co-chaired a seminar where speakers highlighted the role of women for the development of our society. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Shafaat Yar Khan said history illustrates the struggle of numerous men in relation to demanding equal rights for women. He said women play an effective role in leading the nation and shared examples of some of the most prominent women who won awards in recognition to their achievements, skills and abilities. Khan said female students in Pakistan are more talented than male students and have succeeded in securing top positions. He said women being a mother, play a vital role in the upbringing of their children and support them to secure a bright future.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha said women in numerous Islamic countries like Iran, Malaysia and Indonesia are now working freely in different walks of life. He said after acquiring education, women must work in their respective fields and should play an effective and constructive role in the development of the country. Pasha said the need of the hour is to facilitate a conducive environment in offices, where women can work without any hesitation. He advised women to follow the lead of some of the greatest women of Pakistan including the first woman prime minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, Arfa Karim and Bilquis Bano Edhi.

Dr Shahida Noumani said education and training of women are essential for the overall development of a civilized society. She also highlighted the rights of women in Islam and how they were exploited before the advent of Islam. She said International Women’s Day commemorates the inspiring role of women in society as a daughter, a wife, a mother, a sister and a homemaker and highlights their achievements in almost all walks of life
