Education must not stop at literacy—it should build character, conscience, and citizenship, said Vice-Chancellor of the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK), Prof Dr Nasir Jamal Khattak, while addressing the Best Teachers’ Award Ceremony organized by the Association for Academic Quality (AFAQ).
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Dr Khattak praised teachers as true nation builders who shape not only intellect but also integrity. “Education and health are the two pillars upon which nations stand strong,” he said. “We must invest and donate in these sectors because one institution makes lives better while the other saves lives.”
Highlighting the distinction between literacy and education, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that while literacy enables reading and writing, education refines thought, character, and conduct. “Our mission should not be to produce literate people but educated citizens who understand ethics, values, and responsibility,” he remarked.
Dr Khattak underscored the profound influence of teachers in shaping society. “A true teacher goes beyond lectures—he guides students through life’s complexities and contributes to their tarbiyaat, the moral and spiritual grooming essential for responsible citizenship,” he said.
He further noted that teachers play a foundational role in building a civilized society, teaching lessons that extend from personal hygiene and civic cleanliness to tolerance and respect for differing opinions. “Teachers lay the foundation of a healthy, progressive nation,” he added.
Emphasizing mutual respect in the classroom, the VC urged educators to value student curiosity. “Respect your students’ questions. Never silence their voices. Confidence grows only where respect exists,” he advised.
Reflecting on patriotism, Dr Khattak said, “To be patriotic, it is not necessary to die for your country; live for it instead. Follow the law, pay taxes, and contribute to your society’s progress—that is real love for the homeland.”
Calling for greater investment in education and health, he said strengthening these sectors was key to building a strong, developed Pakistan.
The ceremony recognized around 400 teachers from various public and private institutions across Muzaffarabad for their outstanding contributions. The event concluded with AFAQ’s Senior Zonal Manager Shafqat Iqbal Abbasi and Deputy Zonal Manager Naeem ur Rehman Siddiqui presenting souvenirs to Prof Dr Khattak and thanking him for his inspiring address.
