Court Restores Dr Asad Aslam as KEMU Vice Chancellor

The Federal Constitutional Court has set aside a Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict that had nullified the appointment of Dr Asad Aslam as vice chancellor of King Edward Medical University (KEMU), ending nearly eight years of legal stagnation.

The case, originally filed by petitioner Iftikhar Ahmed, questioned the legality of Dr Aslam’s appointment. The LHC had ruled in favor of the petitioner, prompting an appeal that later stalled in the Supreme Court without being taken up for hearing.

In its fresh ruling, the Constitutional Court expressed concern over the prolonged delay and emphasized the need for a conclusive decision. The court reinstated Dr Aslam as vice chancellor while noting that any aggrieved party remains free to seek further legal remedy.

In a related development, two new judges — Justice Rozi Khan and Justice Arshad Hussain Shah — were sworn in earlier today, raising the strength of the Federal Constitutional Court to seven. They join Chief Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan and Justices Hassan Azhar, Aamer Farooq, Ali Baqar Najafi, and K.K. Agha.
