All public and private educational institutions across Gujrat district have been closed until further notice following catastrophic rainfall that has plunged the city into a flood-like emergency.
The decision, confirmed by a notification from the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday, was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff as relentless rains battered the region.
According to district authorities, the city was inundated by a record-breaking 506 millimeters (nearly 20 inches) of rain within a 24-hour period. The unprecedented downpour overwhelmed drainage systems, causing severe flooding in government and private offices, with several feet of standing water reported in multiple areas.
The deluge has brought daily life to a standstill. Major markets and business centers were forced to shut down as shopkeepers struggled with waterlogged premises. Residents across numerous neighborhoods found themselves stranded, with streets and low-lying areas completely submerged, severely limiting mobility.
Beyond disrupting education and commerce, the flooding has raised significant concerns about extensive infrastructure damage and potential health hazards from stagnant water. Emergency teams are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations throughout the district.

Officials have advised all citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid any non-essential travel until the water recedes and the situation is brought under control.
