Pakistan and Canada have agreed to deepen cooperation in postgraduate medical education, specialist training and institutional capacity building after the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Ottawa.
The agreement was signed on Friday during a ceremony hosted by the High Commission of Pakistan in Ottawa, bringing together delegations from the two leading medical education institutions. The CPSP delegation was led by its President, Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal, while the Canadian delegation was headed by RCPSC Chief Executive Officer Dr Christopher Watling.
The MoU provides a framework for institutional cooperation in postgraduate medical education, professional training, faculty capacity building and the exchange of best practices in areas of mutual interest. The partnership is expected to create opportunities for both institutions to share expertise and strengthen approaches to medical training and professional development.
The agreement builds on discussions held earlier this year between Pakistan and Canada on healthcare training, accreditation and specialist education. In January, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Canada, Muhammad Saleem, visited the RCPSC in Ottawa, where officials discussed potential collaboration with CPSP, particularly in postgraduate medical education, accreditation and specialist training.
CPSP has also identified broader collaboration with the Canadian Royal College as part of its efforts to expand international partnerships and align postgraduate training with international standards. Its 2026 bulletin noted potential areas including examiner and assessment exchanges, resident and fellowship training pathways, and collaboration in simulation-based education.
