Punjab Unveils Ambitious Educational Reforms

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a groundbreaking set of education reforms aimed at overhauling public schooling across the province. The sweeping changes include the introduction of mobile Montessori schools, a province-wide school transport system, and a major push toward tech-driven learning environments.

During a high-level meeting on education, CM Maryam launched “School of the Month” and “Teacher of the Month” awards to promote excellence in facilities, discipline, and teaching quality. She also approved Punjab’s first government-run school van and bus service and unveiled the innovative “On-Wheel Montessori School” project, directing authorities to roll out a full-scale transport plan for schoolchildren.

Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat reported dramatic improvements in outsourced school performance, with a 99% increase in student enrolment and a 114% boost in teacher recruitment—resulting in over 60,000 new jobs for educated youth.

Nutrition and infrastructure are also key pillars of the reform. A midday meal program offering milk, energy bars, and biscuits will begin in Faisalabad and soon expand to districts like DG Khan and Layyah. Construction is underway for 10,000 early education classrooms and 400 new toilet blocks in girls’ schools.

Technology and language skills are also receiving a major uplift. The PEEF Tech Schools will expand into rural areas, while 6,000 STEM labs have been approved for schools across Punjab. A six-month spoken English initiative, designed to meet IELTS Standard-4, will target 300,000 students. Google-supported digital training programs are also being launched for both teachers and learners.
