Chinese universities have again dominated the QS BRICS University Rankings 2019 released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) earlier this week. Started in 2013, the QS BRICS ranking ranks the top educational and research institutes in BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Tsinghua University was ranked the top university in the five-nation bloc, with Chinese universities taking seven of the top ten spots. The only other entries in the top 10 were Lomonosov Moscow State University, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) and Indian Institute of Science.

Tsinghua University
This Chinese university was established in the year 1911, as a preparatory school for students who wished to study abroad. Tsinghua endorses self-discipline and excellence as their motto and has remained steadfast in preserving values and philosophies. This year Tsinghua succeeded in scoring 87.2 percent in the BRICS ranking. It is also the 17th best university in the world as reported by QS World University Rankings 2019.
Peking University
This oldest educational institute in China was established in year 1898, as a replacement of the primitive Guozijian School (Imperial College). Peking secured 99.8 percent for employer reputation in BRICS rankings. It is currently placed 30th in the QS World University Rankings 2019. Peking University’s faculty includes 76 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 19 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 25 members of the World Academy of Sciences.
Fudan University
Fudan is one of the most respectable institutes of China and is widely popular among undergraduate students, both national and international. The university was established in 1905 and has since been working for the promotion of Confucian philosophy through their academic and research aspirations. Fudan accommodates 45,000+ national students, with over 17 schools and 69 academic departments. Fudan obtained a score of 81.8 percent for its academic reputation in the QS BRICS rankings. Fudan ranks on the 44th position in the QS global world rankings for the year 2019.
University of Science and Technology in China (USTC)
UTSC was established as a research-based educational institute by the Chinese government and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in the year 1958. The purpose of this institute was to meet technological as well as scientific needs of the country. UTSC is a member of the prestigious C9 leagues that encompasses nine elite-class Chinese universities. UTSC is currently ranked as the 98th best university in the world.
Zhejiang University
Zhejiang University (ZJU) is one of the oldest educational institutes in China and was established in 1897 by Qiushi Academy. The university accommodates 53,000+ students who are taught a diversified range of disciplines by 3,000+ full-time faculty members. Zhejiang was ranked among the top 100 universities of the world by Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings for their research productivity and was awarded 86.9 in the international faculty category by the QS BRICS ranking.
Lomonosov Moscow State University
Lomonosov is regarded as one of the most reputable educational institutes of Russia and was established as a public research university by Mikhail Lomonosov in 1755. The university secured 99.7 for its student-faculty ratio, 71.3 points for academic reputation and 78.2 points for employer reputation. It was named the 90th best university in the QS world university ranking 2019.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai is one of the leading Chinese educational institutes, set up a private sector research university in the year 1896. Shanghai is regarded as the “MIT of East” and scored 96.1 for employer reputation, 85 for citations per faculty and 77.8 for academic reputation. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is also the 59th best university in the world, according to QS.
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB)
IITB is one of the leading institutes of the world for engineering and the number 1 ranked institute in India. It was established in 1958 and has played a pivotal role in the fields of technology and engineering sciences ever since. The university scored 72.9 for employer reputation, 52.5 for academic reputation and 54.1 for citations per faculty. IIT Bombay also has links with peer universities and institutes, both at the national and the international levels that further help it enhance research and enrich its educational programmes.
Nanjing University
Nanjing University works under the Chinese Ministry of education and was established in 1902, as Sanjiang Normal School. The school later evolved into Nanjing University in the year 1950. Nanjing was named the 122nd best university in the QS global rankings. It scored 87.8 points for citations per faculty, 58.5 for academic reputation and 75.3 for international faculty, making it grab the ninth spot on the list.
Indian Institute of Science
IISC was established through a collaboration of Government of India, the Maharaja of Mysore and Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in the year 1909. It is one of the premier educational institutes of the world and is known for high quality academics and research work, particularly in the fields of science and technology. IISC secured highest marks in citations per faculty category in the QS BRICS rankings this year.
