Sindh Empowers Schoolgirls with Safe Transport

In a significant step toward improving access to education, the Government of Sindh has introduced a route-based rental transport service aimed at supporting female students in secondary and higher secondary schools, particularly in rural and underserved regions where mobility remains a major barrier.

Officials from the Sindh School Education Department said the initiative directly addresses the persistent issue of high dropout rates among girls by tackling safety concerns and transportation challenges that often prevent them from continuing their education. The move is expected to reassure families and encourage them to keep their daughters enrolled in school.

Despite education being guaranteed under Article 25-A of the Constitution and reinforced through the Sindh Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2013, authorities acknowledged that the absence of safe and reliable transport has long hindered effective implementation. The new service is intended to bridge this gap by providing secure and accessible travel options for students.

Beyond improving attendance and punctuality among students, officials highlighted that the initiative will also benefit female teachers posted in remote areas, helping ensure their consistent presence in classrooms and contributing to better learning outcomes overall.

The program will be rolled out in phases, beginning with districts that report the highest rates of female student dropouts, including Umerkot, Badin, Jamshoro, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, and Malir. These areas have been prioritized due to longstanding challenges in retaining girls within the education system.

Authorities emphasized that the initiative aligns with the broader Sindh Education Sector Plan (2019–2024) and supports the global framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education. Officials view the transport scheme as a critical complementary effort alongside ongoing infrastructure developments to ensure that no girl is left behind due to lack of access.
