In a major step toward transforming Pakistan’s livestock sector, Sindh’s Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Muhammad Ali Malkani, announced the launch of a collaborative genomics research initiative at the University of Karachi. The effort aims to enhance breed quality and boost milk and meat production in the province.
The announcement was made during the minister’s visit to the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) on Tuesday. Accompanied by Secretary Kazim Hussain Jatoi, Mr. Malkani revealed plans to establish a joint laboratory at the Jamil-ur-Rahman Center for Genome Research, part of the Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD).
“This collaboration will not only address persistent challenges in the livestock sector but also promote innovation through genomic research,” said Malkani. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to quality assurance in veterinary medicines and vaccines.
The high-level meeting was attended by top scientists and administrators, including Prof Dr Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS; Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology; and senior advisors such as Prof Dr Shahid Mansoor and Prof Dr Syed Ghulam Musharraf.
Experts at the meeting underscored the need for modern disease surveillance tools and genetic solutions to combat livestock diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease. They also discussed long-term strategies for increasing productivity, improving export competitiveness, and ensuring food and nutritional security.
Dr Raza Shah highlighted the ICCBS’s scientific leadership and genome sequencing capabilities, while Dr Atta-ur-Rahman called the initiative a “transformative milestone” in Pakistan’s genomic and veterinary sciences.
