Per QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, US universities were clearly ahead of their peers when it came to offering medical education, with six of the top 10 medical universities in the world based there.
American universities outperformed other countries, securing 93 spots in the 500-strong list, with 18 US varsities securing a place in the top 100. Here are the details of the top five medical institutes of the world according to the QS subject rankings for medicine 2019.
Harvard University
Harvard University is regarded as the pioneer in higher education institutes of the world and the oldest in the United States. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the varsity was established in 1636 and was named after its first sponsor John Harvard. Harvard encompasses 11 independent units which include 10 faculties and also the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The varsity is also home to the largest library system in the world with over 18 million volumes and 10 million photographs. According to QS Top Universities ranking for 2018, Harvard ranks third in the world and first for the subject of medical sciences. Harvard succeeded in securing an overall score of 98.9, while it scored 100 for academic reputation, 100 for employer reputation, 100 for H-index citations and 95.5 for citations per paper.
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is the oldest university of the English speaking world and the second oldest in the world. Situated in Oxford City, the varsity comprises of various institutions, consisting of 38 constitution colleges and numerous academic departments which are further divided into four units. The varsity is house to over 22,000 students, around half of the student population are studying in undergraduate degree programmes, while 40 percent of the student body constitutes international students. The university ranks second for medicine and fifth best in the world according to the QS university rankings 2019. Oxford secured an overall score of 96.2, while it secured 95.6 for academic reputation, 93.9 for employer reputation, 97.3 for H-index citations and 96.8 for citations per paper.
University of Cambridge
Founded in 1209, Cambridge is the fourth oldest university in the world and the second oldest in the English speaking world. The university is divided into 31 autonomous colleges and six academic schools that encompasses almost 150 faculties and institutions which teaches a diverse range of academic disciplines. The university has over 100 libraries, with more than 15 million books and nine world-famous arts, cultural and scientific museums. Cambridge ranks sixth in the world and secured an overall score of 95.3 for the subject of medicine, winning it the third sport in QS subject rankings for medicine 2019.
Stanford University
Stanford University is regarded as one of the leading education institutes in the US and currently ranks as the second best university of the world. Founded in 1885, the varsity encompasses seven schools with over 40 academic departments that offer degrees in the fields of medicine, law, business and business studies. Stanford holds the largest university campuses in the US, with 18 interdisciplinary research institutes. It secured an overall score of 94 for medicine and ranks second for employability in the world.
John Hopkins University
Founded in 1876 and named after its sponsor Johns Hopkins, the varsity has blazed a trail to compete among the best universities of the world. Being the first research-based private university in the US, Hopkins invests the highest in research in comparison to other US universities. The varsity is home to 27 Nobel laureates including the former president of America Woodrow Wilson. Hopkins is spread over 10 divisions and currently ranks 21 in the world, with international research centres in China, Singapore and Italy. Hopkins secured an overall score of 93.2 for medicine in the QS subject rankings 2019.
