Education Bridges Pakistan and Australia in Gilani-Kane Talks

Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Australian High Commissioner Timothy Kane met at Parliament House on Monday, with educational cooperation emerging as a key highlight of discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Gilani specifically appreciated Australia’s long-standing support in education, revealing that approximately 20,000 Pakistani students are currently enrolled in Australian universities. He stated that these students are vital for Pakistan’s future, as they will return with skills and knowledge to contribute significantly to national development.

Beyond education, the talks also focused on enhancing economic and parliamentary ties. Gilani noted that bilateral trade remains below potential and called for stronger commercial engagement. He acknowledged Australia’s agricultural support through 13 ongoing projects and joint research, stressing the need for technology transfer and improved market access for Pakistani farmers. He welcomed Canberra’s backing for a planned biosecurity capacity-building visit in early 2026.

High Commissioner Kane described overall relations as deep-rooted and conveyed condolences for the recent flood losses in South Punjab, noting the severe impact of climate change on Pakistan.

Gilani underscored the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, advocating for more exchanges and stronger interaction through Parliamentary Friendship Groups. He cited the July 2025 meeting between the foreign ministers on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum as a positive example of high-level contact.

The Chairman also highlighted shared bonds like cricket and the positive role of the Pakistani diaspora in Australia. Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to deeper cooperation, he extended good wishes for Kane’s tenure and congratulations to the Australian Prime Minister.
