Police have placed 24 members of student organizations from Punjab University (PU) under house arrest following their involvement in a violent clash earlier this week, as reported by 24NewsHD TV on Friday.
According to police sources, the students have been detained for 90 days under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (3MPO). Among those arrested were active officials and members of the Jamiat, Baloch, and Pakhtun student organizations.
The clash, which occurred a few days ago, resulted in injuries to both students and university security guards. The police did not file a case due to the involvement of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the University Inquiry Committee.
Inquiry Committee’s Findings
An inquiry committee set up to investigate the clash that occurred on the Punjab University campus two days ago has completed its investigation and submitted its final report to the Vice-Chancellor.
The report recommends the immediate removal of the senior security officer at Punjab University. The conflict began when a security guard attempted to confiscate a microphone from a student, which led to the chief security officer directing guards to intervene in the students’ protest. This directive resulted in the security personnel taking matters into their own hands.
The committee’s findings indicate that the senior security officer acted as a representative of an anti-student faction. Additionally, the report recommends disciplinary action against students involved in the violence, including those who threw glass bottles and stones.
