The Punjab government is reviewing a proposal to reschedule next year’s Matric examinations to after Ramadan, aiming to accommodate over 2.5 million students across the province. According to a report by City42, the recommendation seeks to address widespread concerns about students’ ability to prepare effectively during the fasting month.
Officials in the Higher Education Department (HED) have begun examining the proposal, which was forwarded by the Provincial Education Minister. This review follows earlier announcements that Matric exams were slated to begin on March 3, 2026, with Intermediate board examinations starting on May 5.
With Ramadan expected to begin around February 18, 2026, and Eid-ul-Fitr likely falling on March 19 or 20, the proposed shift would move the exams to the post-Eid period. This change is intended to prevent a clash between the rigorous exam schedule and the spiritual observance of the holy month.

Educators have supported the potential change, noting that many students struggle to maintain study routines while fasting. In Lahore alone, where more than 300,000 candidates sit for Matric exams annually, teachers argue that a later schedule would allow students a fair opportunity to revise thoroughly, balancing their religious commitments and academic preparation without undue pressure.
A final decision on the revised exam timetable is pending the department’s ongoing review.
