Punjab Targets English Proficiency for Students and Teachers

In a landmark move to elevate education standards, the Punjab government has approved a Rs 12 billion initiative aimed at improving English language skills among students and teachers across public schools.

The ambitious program, spearheaded by the School Education Department (SED), seeks to bridge a critical learning gap revealed in a recent report that found only 35 percent of Punjab’s children are proficient in reading and writing English.

Under the new strategy, the curriculum will be revamped to emphasize practical language use, while students will have greater opportunities to practice communication skills. Teachers will receive specialized training aligned with international standards to enhance classroom instruction and overall learning outcomes.

Technology will also play a central role in this transformation, with plans to introduce digital learning tools and modern teaching materials across schools. Officials describe the effort as a comprehensive approach to aligning Punjab’s public education system with global benchmarks.
