TikTok Launches Dedicated STEM Feed in Pakistan

In a significant push to advance science and technology education, TikTok has officially introduced a dedicated STEM feed for users in Pakistan. The new in-app feature offers a curated stream of educational content aimed at sparking curiosity, encouraging critical thinking, and expanding access to digital learning—particularly among students, educators, and young professionals.

To strengthen the initiative, TikTok has partnered with academic institutions across Pakistan to train teachers in creating compelling short-form STEM content. The platform is also supporting local creators by offering resources to produce videos in English, Urdu, and regional languages. A dedicated #StemTok hashtag and landing page further enhance discoverability of locally relevant STEM content.

The move has drawn praise from senior government officials. Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) Shaza Fatima Khawaja welcomed the effort, stating that it aligns with the government’s vision of leveraging digital tools for education and skill development. Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training Wajiha Qamar echoed the sentiment, calling it a step forward in making STEM education more accessible, especially for young women.

Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations in Pakistan, described the STEM feed as a milestone in the company’s broader goal of educating through creativity and innovation. The initiative supports Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for a Digital Pakistan, promoting the integration of tech-based learning in mainstream education.

However, while the launch of the STEM feed represents a promising use of social media for educational purposes, it also raises important questions. Critics point out that platforms like TikTok—primarily designed for entertainment—face challenges in ensuring the consistency and credibility of educational content. Concerns also linger over the platform’s broader impact on student attention spans, data privacy, and screen addiction.
