The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and heads of federal universities and higher education institutions have agreed to strengthen academic collaboration, research, innovation and industry linkages to improve the quality and relevance of Pakistan’s higher education system.
The commitment was made during the monthly meeting of Vice Chancellors and Rectors of federal universities and higher education institutions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, hosted by Air University in Islamabad. The meeting brought together senior university leaders to discuss key challenges facing the higher education sector and explore opportunities for institutional cooperation and academic development.
HEC Chairman Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, S.I., attended the meeting as the chief guest along with senior HEC officials, including Dr Shafiq, Dr Nasir Mahmood and Dr Habib Boukhari.
Welcoming the participants, Air Marshal (R) Abdul Moeed Khan, HI(M), Vice Chancellor of Air University, stressed the importance of collective efforts, institutional cooperation and the exchange of best practices among universities to address emerging challenges and strengthen Pakistan’s higher education system.
In his address, HEC Chairman Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar highlighted the need for universities to prioritize quality education, research and innovation, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, as well as market-oriented skills. He called for stronger collaboration between universities and industry to ensure that graduates acquire skills aligned with the changing demands of the economy.
The HEC chairman also emphasized greater inter-university cooperation and the sharing of successful institutional practices to raise academic standards and prepare Pakistan’s youth to play a more effective role in national development.
During an interactive session, Vice Chancellors and Rectors discussed a range of issues, including quality assurance, research and innovation, institutional governance, academic collaboration and strategies for achieving greater academic excellence.
The university leaders agreed on the importance of expanding joint academic programmes, collaborative research projects, knowledge-sharing initiatives, faculty and student engagement, and partnerships with industry and other stakeholders. They resolved to pursue joint initiatives aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation, improving educational standards and promoting sustainable growth across the higher education sector.
The participating university leaders also visited the Cyber Security Centre at Air University, where they received a briefing on its facilities, activities and initiatives related to cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
A major highlight of the meeting was the official launch of the Young CEOs, Entrepreneurs and Innovators Summit, Expo & Awards 2026 by HEC Chairman Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar in the presence of Vice Chancellors, Rectors and members of the organizing committee.
The summit is scheduled to take place on October 15–16, 2026, at Bahria University Islamabad. It follows recommendations emerging from the 6th International Students Convention & Expo and aims to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership and creativity among Pakistan’s youth while strengthening connections between academia and industry.
The meeting provided a significant platform for dialogue between university leadership and higher education policymakers. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to improving teaching and learning, advancing research and innovation, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening governance and deepening institutional collaboration.
