The idea of education often conjures the image of a pile of books lying on a table. However, despite studying the same books, some students, although having scored higher, lag behind in real life compared to those with much lower grades. This may not always be the case, but it is a common observation. The question then is: What differentiates individuals with the same degree? It is the skill.
In a world progressing at a rapid pace, youngsters must be equipped not only with bookish knowledge but also with the ability to apply the knowledge gained in a four-walled classroom. Along with academic knowledge, students need to be well-equipped with skills. This not only contributes to personal development but also to the collective growth and progress of society. It adds to the expertise of individuals in dealing with the complexities of life. According to John Ruskin:
“Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect, and passion in their operation.”
We are living in an era with many degree holders but fewer skilled individuals. The job market is highly saturated, and when it comes to selecting the right candidate, something more than a degree is needed to meet the required criteria. Employers look for smart thinkers and workers who prove to be problem solvers when required. As Will Smith said:
“Talent you have naturally. Skill is only developed by hours and hours and hours of beating on your craft.”
The development of skills must be catered to in all educational institutions. Students not well-armed with skills feel a huge gap between the real world and the academic world. The incorporation of website design, computer languages, accounting, and arts and crafts builds a foundation for a secure future.
With skill comes innovation, which is crucial for progress as students demonstrate critical thinking while dealing with tough situations in life. Educational institutions working on project-based learning inculcate emotional and mental resilience to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Working on training students’ skills is actually working towards the holistic development of individuals. In a chaotic world, we need individuals with meaningful existence, well-equipped with social and emotional characteristics. They should be people having self-awareness, empathy, leadership, and interpersonal skills. As Imam Ali (AS) said:
“The value of each man depends upon the art and skill which he has attained.”
Training in skills also addresses inequalities in society. By giving equal chances to all students irrespective of their socioeconomic backgrounds, educational institutions can bring them to the same level. This will ensure that all individuals work as active members of society, thereby contributing to its progress. By adding quality programs of vocational training and internships, institutions can empower marginalized groups and reduce inequalities observed in employment opportunities and economic growth.
As time passes, we are experiencing drastic changes, forecasting unpredictable challenges, from climate change to global pandemics. Adding to students’ skills will enhance their abilities to tackle these challenges. As Herodotus said:
“Force has no place where there is need of skill.”
Students need to be well-aware of ecological issues through sustainability education. This will add to the manpower needed to work on environmental sustainability. Moreover, we are facing numerous health challenges. Health education and public health skills added to the curriculum of every institute will help manage public health crises.
Skills’ training is of prime significance not only for the growth of individuals but also for the progress of society as a whole. With the evolving world, the idea of developing practical skills alongside academic knowledge is a must to meet the demands of societies moving at a rapid pace. Ensuring that students are well-equipped to face the challenges of the modern world will make them positive contributors to society. The cumulative effect of skills education and academic knowledge will produce resilient minds with an innovative approach, capable of nurturing positive changes in society and thereby impacting the globe for the better.
