Education is emerging as a major battleground in the 2026 US midterm elections, with voters in several states set to decide ballot measures involving school prayer, transgender participation in sports, education funding and free school meals.
According to reports by The Washington Post and Education Week, education-related initiatives are appearing on ballots across the country, reflecting growing political divisions over school policies and students’ rights.
In Alabama, voters will decide whether to amend the state constitution to require public schools to allow student-led prayer at the beginning of each school day and require students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Another proposal would require schools to broadcast the national anthem weekly. Supporters say the measures promote religious and civic values, while critics raise concerns about religious freedom and the separation of church and state.
Transgender participation in school sports is another key issue. Nebraska voters will consider a constitutional amendment to reinforce restrictions on transgender students competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams. Similar proposals in states including Arizona, Colorado and Washington could further shape rules governing school athletics.
Other ballot measures focus on education funding and student welfare. Voters in New Mexico, Minnesota and California will consider school funding proposals, while North Dakota residents will decide whether to guarantee free school meals for students.

The outcomes could have long-term consequences, particularly where constitutional amendments make education policies more difficult to reverse. The November elections are expected to shape debates over religious expression, transgender rights, school resources and student welfare across the United States.
