University of Management and Technology (UMT) President Ibrahim Hasan Murad has proposed establishing a coordinated network of universities across Punjab to strengthen efforts against drug abuse and protect young people from substance misuse.
The proposal was made during a meeting with Punjab Counter Narcotics Force (CNF) Director General Brigadier Muhammad Rizwan at UMT on Tuesday. Ibrahim Murad also offered to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force to promote institutional collaboration, intelligence sharing and joint prevention initiatives against drugs in educational institutions.
Ibrahim Murad said bringing universities across Punjab onto a common platform could make anti-narcotics efforts more coordinated and effective. He proposed sharing relevant information about drug trafficking, distribution and consumption among educational institutions and concerned authorities to improve prevention and enable the timely identification of drug-related activities.
The UMT president also stressed the importance of strengthening intelligence networks around universities and proposed cooperation with the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force to take action against individuals involved in the manufacturing and supply of narcotics.
Under the proposed MoU, universities and the counter-narcotics authorities could collaborate on awareness campaigns, student training programmes and other preventive initiatives aimed at reducing drug abuse on campuses. Ibrahim Murad said UMT was ready to mobilise its educational, research and communication resources to support a broader anti-narcotics campaign.
The meeting highlighted the need for greater involvement of students, teachers and educational institutions in preventing drug abuse. Both sides discussed joint initiatives to educate students about the harmful effects of narcotics and strengthen measures to prevent drugs from reaching university campuses.
