Government College University (GCU) Lahore is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country and most of the country’s political leadership has studied from here, also, it was the alma mater of the national poet of Pakistan, Alama Muhammad Iqbal. The majority of the serving bureaucrats of the country are pass-outs of the same institution and that adds to its glory and its part in nation-building. However, the institution is facing controversy as the current vice-chancellor has invited Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the senior vice-president of Pakistan Muslim League-N.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi, “We look forward to hosting Maryam Nawaz Sharif on our campus. Our students are enthusiastic about gaining insights from her and engaging in discussions on youth leadership. This aligns with our commitment to providing our students access to national leadership”
Many have criticized the move as they think that Politics should be kept away from education and that educational institutions should not be partisan, though it is also a fact that the same institution invited the former Prime Minister Imran Khan after his ouster through the vote of no-confidence to speak to the students, and it was Maryam Nawaz who asked the government to take severe action against the Vice-Chancellor. She posted on “X”
“Strict action must be taken against Vice-Chancellor Government College Uni for desecrating an educational institution by lending it to a Fitna & organizing his jalsa on the premises. Using a seat of learning for political hate-mongering is a crime that should not go unpunished.”

Whether politicians should be invited to public universities or not, is a separate debate, but this looks like an attempt to balance the act and be neutral in the ongoing political turmoil in the country, needless to say, Universities are beacons of knowledge and the stage is given to scholarship and also they must strike a balance to achieve academic goals.
