QAU Hosts Gender Equality Session on Women’s Day 2025

The Centre of Excellence in Gender Studies (CEGS) at Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) marked International Women’s Day 2025 with a special session dedicated to honoring the contributions of women and advocating for accelerated action towards gender equality. The event, themed “Accelerate Action,” underscored the need for collective efforts to protect and advance women’s rights.

The session was graced by Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar (S.I.), Vice Chancellor of QAU, who served as the chief guest. In his address, Dr Akhtar reaffirmed the university’s commitment to gender equality and highlighted a pioneering gender audit recently completed at QAU under the leadership of CEGS. This audit marks the first of its kind in Pakistan and serves as a significant milestone in institutional gender analysis.

A keynote address was delivered by Mr Najy Benhassine, Country Director for Pakistan at the World Bank Group. He provided an insightful overview of the World Bank’s initiatives aimed at empowering women in Pakistan, drawing from his expertise in economic growth, education, social protection, and land reform. Mr Benhassine emphasized the importance of creating inclusive economic opportunities and policy frameworks to bridge gender disparities.

An interactive discussion, moderated by Ms Amna H Mobeen from CEGS, provided a platform for students to actively engage in conversations surrounding development, environmental challenges, and women’s rights. The session featured thought-provoking questions from attendees, with Mr. Benhassine offering in-depth responses, encouraging a dynamic and meaningful dialogue.

Dr Aisha Anees Malik, Director of CEGS, concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing her appreciation to the distinguished speakers, panelists, students, and participants for their contributions in making the event a success. She reiterated CEGS’s dedication to fostering discussions and initiatives that propel gender equity forward in academic and social spheres.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work still required to achieve true gender equality in Pakistan. As stakeholders continue to advocate for systemic change, forums like these play a vital role in shaping a more inclusive future for all.
