Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) Secretary Ghulam Fareed has praised the rapid development of the University of Kamalia (UKM), describing its focus on practical skills, research, entrepreneurship and industry-linked education as important for preparing graduates for the changing job market. During his visit to the university, Ghulam Fareed inaugurated a Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) facility and a modern computer laboratory.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Yasir Nawab briefed the secretary on the university’s academic programmes, research activities, teaching practices, infrastructure development, student welfare initiatives and future plans. The university’s current academic portfolio includes programmes in computing, artificial intelligence, data science, software engineering, information technology, environmental science and Medical Laboratory Technology, reflecting its emphasis on technology and market-oriented education.
Ghulam Fareed visited classrooms and other teaching facilities and interacted with students about their learning experiences, career aspirations and professional goals. He also met students who have established businesses through the university’s entrepreneurship programme and took interest in their products and business activities.
The secretary said universities should go beyond producing degree holders and focus on developing graduates with practical knowledge, creativity, professional competence and entrepreneurial abilities. He stressed that young people should be equipped not only to seek employment but also to create businesses and generate employment opportunities for others.
The emphasis on entrepreneurship follows the university’s broader efforts to connect education with business and industry. Earlier this year, the University of Kamalia organised Business Expo 2026, where students presented startup ideas, business models and commercial projects to local entrepreneurs, investors and business representatives.
Ghulam Fareed also appreciated the university’s approach of directing research towards practical solutions to local industrial, economic and social challenges. The institution has increasingly highlighted research and innovation as part of its academic strategy, including an international conference focused on recycling and sustainable resource management.
He praised the contribution of the local community, philanthropists and social figures to the university’s development, particularly support for scholarships, library facilities and educational infrastructure. The university has positioned community engagement as a key part of its mission alongside academic excellence, research and innovation.
Prof Dr Yasir Nawab said the university’s primary objective was to provide modern, career-oriented higher education to young people in the region, particularly students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. He said the institution aimed to develop graduates with knowledge, practical skills, character and confidence while promoting research and entrepreneurship to address local needs.
