In a thought-provoking panel discussion at the University of Lahore (UoL), Prof Dr Lubna Zaheer, Chairperson of the Department of Film and Broadcasting at the University of the Punjab, offered her expert analysis on the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), underscoring the delicate balance between security and freedom of expression in the digital age.
The event, titled “Demystifying Disinformation: Analysis of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA),” was hosted by the School of Integrated Social Sciences (SISS) under the Faculty of Social Sciences. Bringing together voices from academia, media, and policy circles, the panel tackled the far-reaching implications of PECA amid rising concerns over misinformation and cybercrime.
Dr Zaheer, a distinguished guest speaker, drew attention to the need for nuanced policy-making that protects citizens from digital threats while upholding democratic values. She stressed the importance of ethical media practices and legal clarity, warning against overreach that could suppress legitimate discourse.
Joining her on the panel were Dr Adil Nawaz Khan, Zahir Ahmad Sulehri, and Dr Raghib, each contributing diverse perspectives on PECA’s current and future role in Pakistan’s digital landscape. The session was adeptly moderated by Dr Bilal Aslam, with organizational efforts led by Dr Kishwar Munir, Head of Department at SISS.
