Is Chevening Scholarship...

Chevening is an international scholarship scheme that invites students and professionals from 144 countries to undertake postgraduate degree in universities in the United Kingdom. The scholarship was initiated in 1983 as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Awards Scheme (FCOAS). British government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office funds the scheme to build a network of students who will be future leaders in their countries. The name of the scholarship was changed to “Chevening”, which is a joint official residence house of the British foreign secretary and the British deputy prime Minister.

Chevening applicants can apply to a maximum of three master’s courses. They can either opt for three different courses at a single UK university or one course each across three different institutions. However, it is generally recommended to opt for the latter mode of application. As a general rule, an applicant must have an unconditional offer of admission from a UK university in order to be eligible for the award.

Successful Chevening applicants get to pursue a one-year master’s degree in any subject at any top-level UK university. Under the scholarship, student can live and live and study in the UK for a year for free and get an opportunity to develop themselves both professionally and academically, grow their network, experience UK’s culture, and build lasting positive relationships with peers.

Is Eligible For Scholarship...

In order to be eligible for applying to the scholarship, an applicant must be

• A citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (Pakistan is included in eligible countries' list )

• Have an undergraduate degree competitive enough of a postgraduate programme at a UK university. The undergraduate degree should be equivalent to second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK.
• A work experience of two years for the scholarship and five years for the fellowship programme. The types of work experience that are eligible for Chevening includes:
  • Full-time employment
  • Part-time employment
  • Voluntary work
  • Paid or unpaid internships

The work experience can be completed before, during, or after graduating from your undergraduate studies.

• Students should apply and secure admission in Chevening eligible UK University and receive an unconditional offer. Please be noted that it is student’s responsibility to secure the admission before applying to Chevening scholarship programme.
• Fulfill English language requirement (Academic IELTS, Pearson PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English: Advanced [CAE], Trinity ISE II (B2)).

Students are not eligible for Chevening Award if they:

• Hold British or dual British citizenship
• Are an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee (since July 2015) of Her Majesty’s Government which includes the Department for International Development, British Embassies/High Commissions, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Department for International Trade, the Ministry of Defense and the Home Office, the British Council, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
• Have studied in the UK previously with funding from a UK Government sponsorship. However, if you have studied under a UK Government-funded scholarship, you may be eligible for a five years Chevening Fellowship.

WHEN?

Should You Be Applying...

Applications for Chevening Scholarships and some Chevening Fellowships open in August each year. It takes about eight months from the time applications open until the time scholars are offered conditional offers. The apllication process usually closes in November, after which the evaluation of the applications begins. Shortlisted candidates are notified of the interviews by February and the interviews are conducted between March and May. The final awardees are announced in June.

To Go About It...

Applications for Chevening Scholarships are closed at the moment and would reopen in August 2018 for the academic session 2019/2020. As soon as Chevening announces the scholarship, aspirants have to login to the official website and fill the application online. The application need not be completed at once and can be filled over a number of sessions. Use the ‘upload application documents’ button above to upload the necessary files and documents, but bear in mind that only documents in PDF format can be uploaded and none that are over 5MB in size. You will receive email updates about your application status at each step of the selection process. You can also check your status on the online application system.

If your application gets selected, you will be required to appear for an interview, which is a panel assessment based on and around the applicant’s competency, with English being the mode of communication. The panel generally includes representatives of the British Embassy or High Commission who rate candidates based on the global Chevening criteria. A part of the interview generally revolves around the information you provide in your application, while panellists will also probe you about your aims and objectives, as well as aspirations and what you plan to achieve in the future.
