AI Teacher Goes Live as KP Reinvents Public Education

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has taken a decisive leap into the future of education by launching Pakistan’s first government-run virtual school powered by an artificial intelligence teacher, marking a transformative moment for the country’s public education system.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has approved the establishment of an AI Education Authority to oversee the initiative, which aims to modernize learning delivery and improve access to quality education across the province. In its pilot phase, 46 government schools have already been transitioned into virtual institutions, including 33 schools from settled districts and 13 from merged districts, signaling a broad and inclusive rollout strategy.

At the heart of the project is a central digital teaching studio, where an AI-generated teacher is delivering lessons in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Designed to function round the clock, the AI teacher provides instruction in Urdu, English, and Pashto, ensuring accessibility for a diverse student population and overcoming traditional barriers related to teacher shortages and geographic isolation.

The provincial government has also outlined an ambitious expansion plan under the upcoming Annual Development Program set to launch in June. This next phase will convert an additional 175 schools into virtual learning centers, significantly scaling the initiative and potentially reshaping the education landscape in remote and underserved areas.

With a total approved cost of PKR 15.38 crore, including PKR 4.48 crore allocated for the tele-education hub, the project represents a strategic investment in digital infrastructure and innovation. Officials believe the initiative will not only enhance learning outcomes but also position Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a pioneer in AI-driven education within Pakistan.
