The Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL), housed at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK), conducted a one-day training session titled “Interpretation of Forensic DNA and Serology Reports.” The training targeted judges and judicial officers and was held in accordance with directives from the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court.
A total of 25 judges and judicial officers attended the session, which aimed to enhance their understanding of forensic evidence interpretation in criminal cases. The participants were welcomed by Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan, In-charge and Project Director of SFDL, on behalf of Prof Dr M. Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS.
Distinguished guests included Amir Hassan, Director of the CPLC Shanakht Project, and Dr Amar Hussain, Legal Advisor to SFDL, among others.
During his address, Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan emphasized the critical role of forensic DNA analysis in modern criminal investigations. He highlighted SFDL’s contributions to major cases—including the PIA plane crash, the Nooribad van accident, and incidents involving child abuse, murder, and kidnapping.
Dr Khan noted that the lab has delivered forensic reports in more than 8,800 cases and has become a leading hub for capacity building in forensic science, regularly training a wide range of legal and investigative personnel.
The session included an in-depth panel discussion featuring Dr Khan, Dr Hussain, Amir Hassan, and other experts. Participants actively engaged in the dialogue, posing technical questions and commending the quality of the training and overall arrangements.
As part of the program, attendees toured the state-of-the-art SFDL facility. The visiting judges and judicial officers expressed satisfaction with the lab’s operations and praised its advanced technology and high standards.
