LUMS Marks 75 Years of Pakistan-China Ties

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) commemorated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the People’s Republic of China with a distinguished gathering that highlighted the enduring strength and evolving scope of bilateral ties.

Organised by the Parvez Hassan Centre for Chinese Legal Studies at the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL), the event brought together leading academics, legal experts, policymakers, business leaders, and members of the Chinese community in Pakistan to reflect on the longstanding partnership between the two countries.

The gathering underscored the depth and resilience of Pakistan-China relations, which have developed over decades into a comprehensive partnership rooted in strategic cooperation, shared regional interests, and strong people-to-people connections. Participants emphasized the importance of continued diplomatic engagement and the role of academic institutions in promoting legal understanding, informed dialogue, and cross-border collaboration during a period of significant global change.

The event was attended by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lahore, His Excellency Sun Yan, whose presence reaffirmed the significance of Pakistan-China relations and their growing expansion into academic, cultural, and institutional domains.

As part of the celebrations, scholarships sponsored by the Chinese Consulate General in Lahore were awarded to SAHSOL students Laiba Abid and Jalal Tarar, both from the Class of 2027, in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements. The awards reflected the shared commitment of both countries to education, capacity-building, and the development of future legal professionals.

Addressing the gathering, Consul General Sun Yan highlighted the evolving dimensions of bilateral cooperation as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) enters its upgraded 2.0 phase. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration in economic development, technological innovation, green growth, regional connectivity, and academic exchanges as key pillars of the next chapter in Pakistan-China relations.

Discussions throughout the event focused on the long-term trajectory of the partnership and the expanding opportunities for cooperation across various sectors. Speakers also emphasized the role of educational institutions in strengthening institutional linkages and fostering sustained dialogue between the two countries.

Founder of the Centre, Parvez Hassan, underscored the significance of institutional capacity-building in the future of Pakistan-China relations. He noted that while infrastructure projects help create roads, ports, and economic corridors, lasting partnerships are ultimately sustained through strong institutions, scholarship, mutual understanding, and the ability of societies to learn from one another.

Among those in attendance were LUMS Rector Shahid Hussain, Provost Dr Tariq Mahmood Jadoon, SAHSOL Dean Dr Sadaf Aziz, senior representatives of Chinese and Pakistani businesses, diplomats, legal practitioners, and policy experts.
