GCWUF Hosts Sensitization Session on Nutrition and Breastfeeding

The Department of Food Science and Technology at the Government College for Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF), in collaboration with the Quality Enhancement Cell, organized a one-day sensitization session under the banner of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG-3) – Good Health and Well-being. This event, held in the video conference room, was supported by the SUN Secretariat, Planning & Development Board, Government of Punjab, and UNICEF. Faculty members from various departments attended the session, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to addressing key health issues.

The session aimed to elevate awareness among students and faculty about crucial topics such as nutrition, the significance of breastfeeding, and early childhood development. It also focused on promoting activities in line with Global Breastfeeding Week. The program commenced with a recitation of the Holy Quran, setting a respectful and solemn tone for the proceedings.

Prof Dr Aysha Sameen, Chairperson of the Department of Food Science and Technology, delivered the welcome address. She emphasized the importance of the session in fostering a deeper understanding of nutrition and health among the academic community.

The guest speaker, Mr Ateeq Ur Rahman, Program Coordinator of the SUN Unit at the Planning & Development Board, Government of Punjab, delivered an enlightening presentation. He shared concerning statistics about the nutritional status in Pakistan, revealing that 80% of women in the country are Vitamin D deficient, and 50% suffer from iron deficiency anemia. These deficiencies significantly impact the health of newborns, leading to stunted growth and other micronutrient deficiencies.

Mr Rahman highlighted various global, national, and provincial initiatives aimed at promoting and protecting breastfeeding. He emphasized that exclusive breastfeeding can reduce infant mortality rates by up to 14 times during the first six months of life and shields children from numerous post-birth diseases. His comprehensive overview underscored the critical need for sustained efforts to improve maternal and child health.

The session concluded with remarks from Prof Dr Saima Akram, who reinforced the key messages discussed and encouraged ongoing efforts to support breastfeeding and nutrition initiatives within the community.

This sensitization session is a testament to the Department of Food Science and Technology’s commitment to advancing public health education and supporting the goals of SDG-3. By bringing together experts and educators, the department aims to make a tangible impact on health and well-being in the region.
