Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has announced the launch of the much-anticipated School Meal Programme, which is set to begin next month in three districts of South Punjab. The initiative aims to address the nutritional needs of schoolchildren in the region, with the ultimate goal of expanding across the province.

Speaking to the media, the minister confirmed that the programme would kick off in the districts of Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, and Rajanpur, where milk and food will be provided to students attending government schools. This is the first phase of a broader plan that will eventually extend to all districts in Punjab.

Rana Sikandar Hayat highlighted the pressing issue of malnutrition among children in South Punjab, noting that many students suffer from both mental and physical weakness due to inadequate diets. “This programme is a step towards ensuring that our students receive the proper nutrition they need to thrive,” the minister said. “There will be no compromise on the quality of the meals provided.”

The programme is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve education and student well-being in the province. Consultations are currently underway to select a qualified company that will manage the logistics and distribution of the meals. Rana Sikandar Hayat assured that once the programme is fully operational, all government school students in Punjab will benefit from these nutritional interventions.

The launch of the School Meal Programme is being welcomed as a significant development in addressing child health and improving educational outcomes, particularly in underprivileged areas. The government hopes that by tackling malnutrition, students will perform better academically and experience overall improvements in their health.

Further details about the expansion timeline and partnerships with private companies are expected to be announced soon.
