The 17th Summer Internship Program-2024, the nation’s largest internship initiative, successfully concluded on Tuesday at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK). The program, hosted annually by ICCBS, provided comprehensive training to 135 students from various academic and research institutions across the country.

The program offered a diverse range of training opportunities in multiple fields, including Biological and Chemical Sciences, Diagnostic Labs, Industrial Analytical Center (IAC), and the Center for Bioequivalence Studies and Clinical Research (CBSCR). These fields are crucial for fostering the next generation of scientists and researchers in Pakistan.

During the certificate distribution ceremony held at the Golden Jubilee Hall of ICCBS, Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen, Director of ICCBS, praised the participants for their dedication and hard work. “This ceremony is a testament to the perseverance, adaptability, and eagerness to learn that these students have demonstrated,” she remarked. Prof. Shaheen emphasized that the primary goal of the internship program is to inspire students to pursue scientific research, equipping them with practical skills essential for their future careers.

Prof Dr Asmat Salim, a senior scientist at the Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD) and the program’s organizer, highlighted the competitive nature of the selection process. “This year, around 1800 students, including BS and MPhil graduates, applied for the internship, with only 135 being selected. These students represented more than 30 universities from across Pakistan, including institutions from Karachi, Sindh, and other provinces,” she said.

Prof Salim extended her gratitude to the faculty, staff, and students who contributed to the success of the program. She expressed hope that the interns had a valuable and enriching experience at ICCBS, and wished them success in their future endeavors.

The event concluded with Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen distributing certificates to the successful interns, marking the end of a transformative experience for the participants, who are now better prepared to embark on their scientific careers.
