PU Library marks World Book and Copyright Day

On the eve of World Book & Copyright Day, the Punjab University (PU) Library hosted a series of enriching events aimed at promoting literacy, intellectual discourse, and acknowledging the contributions of avid readers and supporters of the literary community.

The festivities commenced with a special ceremony where recognition was bestowed upon the dedicated members of the Publishers/Book Sellers Liaison Committee and volunteers who played pivotal roles in the success of the Punjab University Book Fair 2024. Professor Dr. Nabila Rehman, Principal of Oriental College, representing Vice Chancellor University of the Punjab, presented appreciation certificates to these individuals, acknowledging their valuable contributions.

Following the ceremony, participants delved into stimulating discussions on two profound literary works. Dr. Ayesha Akram, Assistant Professor from the Institute of English Studies, led an insightful exploration of Romila Thapar’s seminal work “Voices of Dissent: An Essay.” The discussion highlighted the significance of political dissent in shaping India’s history and societal norms, sparking engaging conversations among attendees.

Simultaneously, Dr. Muhammad Naeem, Associate Professor from the Oriental College, captivated the audience with a session on “Afsanay, Dramay, or Novel k Chandd Oraaq” by Muhammad Salim-ur-Rehman. Delving into the fast-paced action and gripping narratives of two plays, as well as the intriguing excerpts from an unfinished novel, Dr. Naeem sparked curiosity and intrigue among readers.

In a culminating moment of the event, the top 10 library users were honored with the prestigious Book Lovers Award. These individuals were recognized for their unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of reading and for their significant contributions to the library community. The awards were presented by Mr. Mahmood ul Hassan, a renowned journalist and avid book lover.

Addressing the attendees, Chief Librarian Dr. Muhammad Haroon Usmani emphasized the library’s dedication to promoting a culture of reading and respecting intellectual property rights. He expressed gratitude to all participants for their active engagement and reiterated the importance of intellectual discourse in shaping a knowledgeable society.

The World Book & Copyright Day celebrations at the Punjab University Library served as a testament to the enduring power of literature and the invaluable contributions of those who champion literacy and intellectual pursuits.
