SMIU Syndicate pays tribute late historian Gul Hassan Kalmati

The 28th Syndicate meeting of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) was held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the Conference Room of the university. Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai presided over it. The Syndicate approved minutes related to the academic and administrative matters, passed earlier in different statutory bodies.

The SMIU Syndicate presented a great tribute to a noted historian and researcher Gul Hassan Kalmati who passed away on May 17, 2023, by unanimously passing a resolution. In the resolution, it was said that Mr Kalmati had contributed a lot towards the history through his research work, especially on Karachi city, its leading personalities of the past, its old and historic building and its neighboring areas like Kohistan and Las Bella.

The resolution reads that Mr Gul Hasan Kalmati had close association with Sindh Madressatul Islam since the days of his education in SM Arts College. “He has penned down a valuable material on Sindh Madressatul Islam, which is included in his book “Karachi: Sindh Jee Marvi” which was translated by Dr Amjad Siraj Memon into English with the title of “Karachi: Glory of the East.”

The Syndicate resolved that if his heirs will provide his books, a corner will be established in SMIU with his name. VC Dr Mujeeb Sahrai presenting overview of the SMIU, said SMI University had recently organised a successful Global Research Congress and other such international events will be organised in coming days. He said SMIU is giving emphasis on quality education and research work and those young researchers will be encouraged who will conduct research on the subjects that will benefit the society.

Besides Dr Mujeeb Sahrai, other Syndicate members who attended the meeting were Dr A.Q. Mughal, Dr Jamshed Adil Halepoto, Dr Mohammad Malook Rind, Dr Ambreen Fazal, Mr Asif Hussain Samo, Dr Aamir Iqbal Umrani, Mr Ghulam Mustafa Shaikh, Ms Quratulain Nazeer Ahmed, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Gopang and Mr Muhammad Naeem Ahmed.
