In a swift response to a violent clash between two student factions this past Monday, the University of Karachi (UoK) has implemented a blanket ban on all activities of student groups affiliated with different political parties. The move is aimed at restoring peace and order on the campus, following a disturbance that led to the summoning of Rangers and police.

The altercation unfolded when several students, allegedly affiliated with political student groups, forcefully entered the administration building with the intention of confronting members of an opposing faction. The situation escalated rapidly, prompting university authorities to take decisive action to quell the unrest.

A formal notification outlining the immediate ban on political student groups has been circulated throughout the university, affecting thousands of enrolled students. Heads of departments, institute directors, 62 wing deans, and wing commanders have all received notifications regarding this decision.

On the first day of the 2024 academic session, approximately 6,000 students enrolled in various morning programs at the University of Karachi. Meanwhile, enrollment for evening programs is still ongoing. The ban was enforced after members of one student group reportedly used sticks to assault students from a rival faction inside the Mehmood Hussain Library.

University officials expressed deep concern over the violent incident and emphasized the need for a secure and conducive learning environment. The decision to ban political student groups is seen as a proactive measure to prevent further clashes and disruptions on the campus.

Local law enforcement agencies are actively involved in maintaining order, and additional security measures have been implemented to safeguard the university community. The ban on political student groups will remain in effect until further notice, and university authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to identify those responsible for the violence.

The University of Karachi, a renowned educational institution in Pakistan, is now focused on promoting a culture of tolerance, inclusivity, and academic excellence as it strives to overcome the challenges posed by the recent clash.
