The Global and Regional Studies Center (GRSC) at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) hosted a seminar on “Understanding Political Developments in Bangladesh and the Future of Pakistan-Bangladesh Relations” on September 3. The event brought together a distinguished panel of national experts in international relations, who provided in-depth insights into Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape and its potential impact on relations with Pakistan.

The seminar featured prominent figures, including Ambassador Dr Masuma Hasan, Chairperson of the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA); Ambassador Qazi Khalilullah, Executive Director of the Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS); Professor Noman Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Sciences at NED University; Ambassador Rafiuzzaman Siddiqui, Advisor to the Sindh Ombudsman; and Dr Nausheen Wasi, Head of the International Relations Department at Karachi University (UoK). The session was moderated by Ambassador G. R. Baluch, Director of GRSC-IoBM, who opened with an overview of the historical context influencing current geopolitical dynamics.

The panelists examined the political shifts in Bangladesh, focusing on the social and economic factors that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They also provided strategic insights into how Pakistan can strengthen its diplomatic ties with Bangladesh. The panel discussions explored the historical context of Bangladesh’s political turmoil, its socio-economic challenges, and the broader regional impact.

Mr Talib Karim, President of IoBM, highlighted the seminar’s relevance, emphasizing the importance of Pakistan mending relationships with its regional neighbors. He praised Ambassador G. R. Baluch for addressing a timely topic, which he said offered valuable insights for the audience.

Ambassador Dr Masuma Hasan underscored that the future of Pakistan-Bangladesh relations hinges on Bangladesh’s ability to attain political stability following the departure of Sheikh Hasina. She stressed, “We must remain cognizant of the nation’s tumultuous history, from the bloodshed of 1971 to its series of political upheavals.”

Ambassador Rafiuzzaman Siddiqui shared his experiences from his time as Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh in 2016, shedding light on the country’s socio-political environment during Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian tenure. He noted that criticism of her leadership was severely punished and that India’s silence during her rule contributed to local unrest.

Ambassador Qazi Khalilullah provided an overview of India-Bangladesh relations, emphasizing key economic agreements that have helped strengthen regional cooperation. He also discussed the future of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and its role in fostering stability in the region.

Dr Nausheen Wasi highlighted the demand for greater accountability from the Bangladeshi people following the political transition. She noted the increasing public pressure for transparency and reform, which could reshape the country’s political landscape.

Professor Noman Ahmed delved into the roots of Bengali nationalism, exploring how historical intellectual discourse following the British occupation has shaped Bangladesh’s identity and national consciousness.

The seminar concluded with a lively question and answer session, where attendees engaged with the panelists, deepening their understanding of the intricate dynamics shaping Pakistan-Bangladesh relations and the broader South Asian political landscape.

This seminar at IoBM provided a platform for thought-provoking discussions on the future trajectory of Pakistan-Bangladesh relations amidst significant political changes in the region.
