NHS Names Eighteen-Member PMC Board To Oversee Medical Education

The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has announced an 18-member National Medical and Dental Academic Board (NMDAB) that will be tasked with overseeing the standard and practices of education in medical dental institutions of Pakistan.

In October last year, the president had dissolved the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council in exercise of powers vested with him and promulgated an ordinance that made way for the establishment of Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC).

A notification issued by the NHS ministry said the member of NMDAB included the Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman as well as the vice president of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan.

Per rules, each of the four provinces were required to nominate one member for NMDAB from public sector medical universities. Subsequently, Punjab nominated Fatima Jinnah Medical University Vice Chancellor of Prof Dr Aamer Zaman Khan. However, the remaining three provinces are yet to forward the names of their nominees.

Besides the provincial nominees, Principal of the Army Medical College will also be a member of the board.

The provinces were also asked to nominate a member each from private medical universities or colleges operating therein. In this regard, Punjab has nominated Shalimar Medical and Dental College Lahore Principal Dr Zahid Bashir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa forwarded the name of Northwest School of Medicine Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Tariq.

Dr Arif Tajammul of Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, Dr Amir Bilal of Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, and Dr Saeed Sadiq Hamid of Aga Khan University, Karachi have been nominated as members of the board from public or private medical colleges.

Prof Dr Tahir Aziz Ahmed of Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, and Dr Khalid Mehmood of King Edward Medical University, Lahore have also been nominated as members. Two dentists, Dr Saqib Riaz Qazi and Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Kefi Iqbal, have also been included in the board as its members.
