World’s leading anti-imperialist intellectual, Noam Chomsky will address at the 6th Yohsin Lecture organized by Habib University Karachi on “Reflections on the future of democracy, nuclear threat and the looming environmental catastrophe in a post Trumpian world.”

The lecture will premiere today on his 92nd birthday and will be live streamed on Habib University Youtube Channel.

Chomsky is a Laureate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Arizona and an Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has penned over 100 books on linguistics, war, politics, and mass media.

He is best-known for his work, “Manufacturing Consent”, explaining the media’s role in reinforcing state policies across the political spectrum while marginalizing contrary perspectives and the mainstream press is corporate-owned and thus reflects corporate priorities and interests.

He has always been vocal against the mainstream media practices. In his acclaimed article, “What Makes Mainstream Media Mainstream,” written for Z Magazine, Chomsky criticised the mainstream media role, “The real mass media are basically trying to divert people. Let them do something else, but don’t bother us (us being the people who run the show). Let them get interested in professional sports, for example. Let everybody be crazed about professional sports or sex scandals or the personalities and their problems or something like that. Anything, as long as it isn’t serious. Of course, the serious stuff is for the big guys. “We” take care of that.”

In June 2020, Chomsky escalated his criticism of outgoing US President Donald Trump as “undeniably” the worst criminal in history.

He told the socialist quarterly Jacobin magazine that Donald Trump was a “tin-pot dictator” and that Republicans were “worse than the old Communist Party”.

He will be sharing his thoughts on the environmental catastrophe in a post Trumpian era. His lecture is being anticipated as an academic treat by on-campus students and the online viewers.
