PU Launches Tree Plantation Campaign on World Water Day

Punjab University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, emphasized the urgent need for massive forestation in the region to ensure clean water, a pleasant environment, and tackle the challenges posed by climate change. His remarks came during a seminar organized by Punjab University (PU) in observance of World Water Day, held at Al Raazi Hall on Friday. The event was followed by an awareness walk from the undergraduate block to the admin block ground, with Dr Khalid Mahmood leading the participants. The tree plantation campaign was inaugurated by planting saplings named after dignitaries present at the event.

Prominent figures including former Minister of Health Dr Saeed Elahi, MPA Zeb-un-Nisa, Nasir Bholoo, Convener of the Tree Plantation Campaign and Dean Faculty of Geosciences, Prof Dr Sajid Rashid Ahmed, heads of departments, faculty members, administrative officers, employees, and a large number of students attended the seminar.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood underscored the importance of environment-friendly policies, highlighting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s initiatives. He emphasized the role of universities in conducting awareness programs to foster a pleasant environment and a civilized society. Dr Khalid Mahmood emphasized the significance of clean water and trees, noting that the presence of trees on the PU campus helps to lower the temperature by 2 degrees Celsius.

Dr Saeed Elahi addressed the issue of contaminated water, warning about its association with various diseases. He noted that over 3 billion people worldwide lack access to clean water and stressed Pakistan’s responsibility to provide a conducive environment for future generations.

Prof Dr Sajid Rashid Ahmed highlighted the indispensable role of water in the world’s ecosystem and announced the establishment of the first water testing lab at CEES. He commended Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood’s vision and the organization of a special seminar on World Water Day with the theme ‘Water for Peace’, coupled with the tree plantation campaign to combat smog.

The initiative ‘One Student One Tree’ was announced, aiming to provide free plants to all departments of Punjab University. Prof Dr Sajid Rashid Ahmed emphasized the importance of a successful tree planting campaign to mitigate smog and air pollution in Lahore.

The seminar and tree plantation campaign symbolize Punjab University’s commitment to environmental sustainability and serve as a call to action for individuals and institutions to play their part in preserving the environment for future generations.
