The annual Academic Ranking of World Universities, commonly known as the Shanghai ranking, has seen China and US make the most gains in the 2018 list, however, Harvard University retained the top spot for the 16th year running. China saw six new universities make their way into the top 500 in the world, while there were four new US universities in the 2008 list.

Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is considered among the three most authentic and widely revered university rankings besides QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is published by the Shanghai Ranking consultancy.

In the ARWU 2018 Rankings, 16 of the top 20 spots have been claimed by universities in the US, with only three universities from the UK and one from Switzerland making it among the top 20. University of Cambridge was at the third spot, University of Oxford was at the seventh place, while the third UK varsity in the top 20 was University College London at the 17th place. Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich was placed 19th on the list. Besides Harvard at the top and Cambridge at third, the top five included Stanford University (2), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (4) and University of California, Berkeley (5).

The top Chinese universities in the ARWU 2018 top 500 were Tsinghua University at the 45th spot, Peking University at 57th spot and Zheijang University at number 67. Overall, the US had 46 universities, the UK had eight, Australia had six and Switzerland had five universities in the top 100.

Pakistani Placement

Only four Pakistani universities made it to the ARWU 2018 Rankings, but each remained far away from the elusive top 500 club. The top ranked Pakistani university in the list was COMSATS University, placed in the 601-700 band of the ranking. It was followed by Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad that was placed in the 701-800 band and University of the Punjab, which was placed in the 801-900. Aga Khan University was the fourth Pakistani university in the ranking, placed in the 901-1000 band.

ARWU, or the Shanghai Ranking, was launched in 2003 and rates universities on the basis of six parameters, each having a different weight. They are as follows:
